There are several different ways to go about this, but users will need to be able to select through/behind other objects. For example, in the case case of a closed off shell, the user might need to select the inside of the shell (I cheated and left a small opening to grab this screenshot):
Here are multiple ways to add this capability. The more ways to go about it the better IMO.
Hover curser over the object and right click to pull up a menu with one of the options being "Select Other," "Select Nearby," or something along those lines. Next choose from a menu of the geometry near where the right click happened.
Hover curser over the object or select a nearby object, then press the arrow keys to have a small menu of all possible selections pop up. (Each one highlight when clicked on). A final OK button to confirm the choice.
Allow for a key press then scroll wheel to have the same menu pop up. Could be any key combination, but maybe shift + tab opens something similar to the image above and the scroll wheel selects through the options. Once shift + tab is released, it selects the highlighted object
Hold left click and click in the scroll wheel (lock the cursor in place on the screen), then drag the mouse forward to watch the highlighted object change and go deeper through your geometry or drag backward to watch the selection move closer to the user. Release the left click and scroll wheel once the desired geometry is highlighted. (I don't think any other CAD program has this. It could be unique to Zoo)
