Here is a PoC of making XEP-0138 zlib compression work with the latest version of slixmpp. It's not amazing neat but it works correctly in my various tests. Failure when establishing stream connection isn't currently handled correctly.
I couldn't sign in to your gitlab deployment so I'm submitting it here.
